The focus of this workshop will be the human figure and portrait head with the emphasis on gesture, design and surface texture. Moving beyond the basics to explore what makes a sculpture art, as opposed to a model or mere replica of life. John will also share his techniques and philosophy on sculpting the characters of the American West. www.colemanstudios.com
John Coleman
JOHN COLEMAN is a member of the Cowboy Artists of America and a Fellow member of the National Sculpture Society. He is a regular participant in Prix de West and Masters of the American West Invitational Exhibitions. His work has won many awards including the CAA Silver Medal in 2002 and the CAA Gold Medal and Award for Best Body of Work in 2004. An alumnus of Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles, and Scottsdale Artists’ School, Coleman’s work is in numerous private and public collections, including Phoenix Art Museum and Tucson Museum of Art.
According to John, “As an artist, every year seems to be better and more exciting than the year before. I’m especially having fun with the medium of painting and expanding the subject matter of my sculptures.
The process of being a student is the most important asset an artist can have. I credit much of my success over the past 20 years to my connection with the Scottsdale Artists School, both as an instructor and as a student.”
