Art History Lecture Series: Contemporary Art with Perrin McEwen

MURAL, Pollock's 1943 masterpiece

Three talks, one on Pollock's long-overlooked life and artistic development in suburban Phoenix (!) during his early years, followed by a careful analysis of his entire career up to his death in 1956 and finally a detailed look at MURAL his astonishing 1943 painting which introduced the world to his abstract style.

Perrin McEwen

Perrin McEwen was born in New York and lived and educated primarily in the Midwest. After a decade in St Louis he and his English wife, Anne, moved back to Manhattan where Perrin became a consultant for the US State Department in their efforts to create and operate the FESTIVAL OF INDIA, a thirty-four month long cultural exchange between our county and India. Perrin was the co-Chair of the Arts and Educational Division for the FESTIVAL and acted as liaison between these two countries and a selection of 18 US museums and nine US colleges and their artistic and educational counterpoints in India.

At the FESTIVALS conclusion he moved to London for 12 years, working in corporate consultancy for two large UK organizations and was involved with the publicity and corporate outreach for the Eurostar train service between London and Paris and eventually, Brussels. After the trains launch, he worked with a variety of European companies in the implementation of Your Future in Europe, a collegiate program in Paris involving 14,000 students over a three-year period.

Returning to the USA in 2001 Perrin and Anne settled in Scottsdale and, as his interest in contemporary art has been life-long, became a volunteer at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMOCA) and became involved in docent work, did public tours of travelling shows and collections, and eventually led private talks and lectures with their Staff on current art events. His efforts extended to include talks on how to communicate with the public in becoming comfortable with art of our current time and as such also gave talks to the Phoenix Art Museum in that vein.

He has also worked with the Foothills Community Foundation on lectures specifically about Jackson Pollock and contemporary art movements. These talks were also given at the Fountain Hills Community College and four years ago he addressed the National Docent Symposium in Washington DC on the same subject.
