Abstracting the Representational Subject

Class | Available

Do you find yourself copying photos instead of creating artwork? Do you lack

energy, mystery or boldness in your paintings? In this class, you will learn how to

break down complex scenes quickly by seeing the most important large shapes in

a reference. Learn to capture an initial structure of your subject quickly. Find four to

six most important values, layer in bold color and break edges to create a dynamic

painting. We will explore how to inject abstraction into your representational work

using various tools (knives, credit cards, ceramic wedges, squeegees, sponges,

stencils, blenders). FUN is required! Daily demos and individual instruction at each

easel. All levels welcome!

• Please note: This Class meets 9:30-4:30

Lanford, Laura
Laura Lanford

Laura Lanford is a representational impressionist who specializes in oil painting. She has always had a love of art and studied graphic design/illustration for two years at Auburn University. Although she pursued a different career, she became serious about oil painting after retiring from managing and working in her private pediatric speech therapy practice. Laura pursued oil painting in Atlanta, Georgia where she studied with several professional artists including Master Impressionist James Richards. After three years of mentoring with James, she began teaching classes and workshops at James Richards Studio for seven years. Additionally, Laura has taught at the Booth Art Academy as well as several art venues around the Southeast. Laura and her family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona in 2022 where she has continued her passion for painting as well as found a new love of exploring the Southwest. You can find Laura in her working studio in Carefree, Arizona at The Stagecoach Village. She currently sells her work privately.
