Guthrie, Milly
Milly Guthrie

Milly Guthrie was born and raised in Peru. "From an early age, I knew I wanted to be an artist. Upon completing high school, I studied Graphic Design and then relocated to the United States, fell in love with the Southwest and settled in Arizona. Ever since I can remember, I always had an entrepreneur’s spirit and after starting a family, me and my husband, who is also a graphic designer, decided to open a garment decorating business, and ever since then, we have been serving clients for many years. I also became a mother of two beautiful daughters that are our joy. Throughout the years I always had a deep desire to become a fine artist and I didn’t know then what I know now, I was painting beautiful stories and life experiences with more than just brushes. Many years later, my fine art journey started when I discovered the Scottsdale Artist School in 2019, where I took my first workshop with Robert Liberace, a master of Alla Prima painting, and one of my biggest influences to this day. I observed each of his brush strokes with attention and realized that it was possible to make a living as a fine artist, my eyes where opened, and I told myself it’s never too late, but I wasn’t ready yet. It wasn’t until 2021 when I decided to become a professional fine artist.

The way that I approach learning is by taking select workshops through the year, I visit museums to learn by observation and sketching in graphite, studying paintings from the old masters like Adolph Bouguereau, John Singer Sargent, Rembrandt, and others, as well as contemporary living masters by visiting galleries and exhibitions. I practice the discipline of painting from life and I also enjoy painting the landscape in Plein Air to sharpen my skills. I then bring all these elements together to the studio to create timeless pieces of art, I believe that the combination of various styles of learning is shaping me to create my unique voice. I primarily paint in oils and I also love to experiment with watercolors and gouache for my studies. I am passionate about studying the human figure and nature.

In 2023 early in my fine art journey I was invited to be an artist in residence for the Western Spirit Museum In Scottsdale Arizona, were I have had the amazing opportunity to learn about Western Art and American History, and participate in many live demonstrations for the museum.

In 2024 I had the honor of being approached by the Scottsdale Artist School to teach their Young Adult program. I feel that teaching not only makes me a better artist, but it also gives me a chance to encourage and inspire the future generation.

My passion and vision are to capture the light and the story in everything around me to be able to create beauty with my brushes and bring joy that will last a lifetime.”
