Modern Renaissance Portrait

Workshop | Available

Do backgrounds that have a modern twist seem daunting? Learn how to fuse classical with contemporary realism seamlessly into portrait or figurative paintings. Working from a model using the classical methods of oil painting, Nanci will demonstrate and give individual instruction to students. She will also show how to incorporate modern tools and techniques to any background of a classically painted portrait; students will uncover the secret of creating texture and movement. From concept to design, students will walk away with the key elements necessary when combining color harmonization, lighting, value, edges, and mood. This style is a fun way to modernize traditional skills whether working from life or a photo. We will be working from a limited palette. *Students must have traditional life drawing and painting skills. Advanced beginner, intermediate, advanced levels. www.nancifrancevaz.com

France-Vaz, Nanci
Nanci France-Vaz

ARC Living Master Nanci France-Vaz is a modern renaissance artist that uses allegorical symbolism to create visual stories on canvas. France-Vaz draws inspiration from the Pre-Raphaelite and Naturalist periods of art, poetry, and classic literature, and film. Her introspective portraiture and figurative paintings embrace the heart within. Tinted with a dreamlike atmosphere, her works evoke deep archetypal wisdom that are emotive and imaginative.

France-Vaz has exhibited at Sotheby’s NY Arc Salon, Dacia Gallery NYC, Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Modern European Art ModPortrait, Abend Gallery, Principle Gallery, IX Art 2022, and Rehs Contemporary Gallery NYC in Late Spring 2026.

Her select awards include: Arc Purchase Award, Rehs Gallery Award, Best In Show at WMOCA, 2nd Place Southwest Art Artistic Excellence, Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize Honorable Mention awarded by Raymar Art, Allied Artists Len G Everett Memorial Award, her paintings hang in private collections with 6 paintings acquired by the ARC for their Living Master Collection.
