Capturing the Light: Painting Strong Sunlight

Workshop | Available

Bring your paintings to life by mastering the vibrant interplay of value and color temperature to convey the sense of light. This workshop bridges the worlds of plein air and studio painting by splitting your time between painting outdoors on the school grounds and working indoors from photographs. Achieve clean, luminous color without muddy mixtures, and learn how to build successful compositions using value patterns. You will also learn how to select a good reference photo as the group reviews images together to identify which characteristics are likely to help your painting and which ones hurt it. The course will include a daily demonstration painting, with insightful slideshow lectures featuring his own artwork and the work of others. You will receive plenty of dedicated, individual guidance at your easel as you apply these concepts to your own paintings during the week. www.timhornart.com

Horn, Timothy
Timothy Horn

Born and raised in the small town of Yellow Springs, Ohio, Tim graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City, with a focus in graphic design. He worked at several design firms in NYC before moving to San Francisco, where he continued to work as a designer, and on a whim took a painting class.?Within a year he realized he had found his calling and was completely hooked. He began painting more and more and doing less and less graphic design. In the fall of 2006, he closed his design business and now paints full time. He lives in Northern California and paints all over the Bay Area and beyond. About half his work is done on location, or "plein air", and the rest is done in his studio from studies or photographs.

He occasionally participates in plein air events, is represented by 5 galleries and teaches painting workshops around the country and abroad. Horn's work has won numerous awards, been featured in several magazines, and was on the cover of Southwest Art in 2012. Horn was the Signature Artist of Beaux Arts in 2021, and he is a signature member of both the California Art Club and Oil Painters of America.
