Finding Ourselves in the Landscape

Workshop | Available

The landscape is a powerful teacher that can help artists develop potent connections to their medium, subject, and self – the foundation of the best and most inventive painting. Through daily live demos, hands-on instruction, and Q&A conversations arising from the outdoor, observational painting process, attendees will have the chance to explore the rudiments of their unique creative voice – and then build on their discoveries through landscape painting. Time will be divided between outdoor and in-studio work. Depending on weather, painting times may change and take place in the morning or later afternoon, with a break in between, so students are not painting during the hottest part of the day. Jivan Lee

Jivan Lee is an oil painter based in Taos, NM. He grew up in Woodstock, NY, and studied painting and environmental policy at Bard College. Following graduate school he sold cheese at the Union Square Farmer’s Market in New York City, taught for the University of New Mexico in Taos, and founded and directed the Project for Art and the Environment. Today the heart of Jivan’s work is an intensive, year-round outdoor painting practice that explores time, change, and the complexities of how humans see and shape the environment. His work has been the subject of a number of solo exhibits and written about in Southwest Contemporary, The Santa Fe New Mexican, The Albuquerque Journal, American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, Western Art & Architecture, and Phoenix Home and Garden among other publications.

Jivan’s paintings are represented by LewAllen Galleries in Santa Fe, NM; William Havu Gallery in Denver, CO; and Altamira Fine Art in Jackson Hole, WY, and Scottsdale, AZ.
