James Oglethorpe: from Slave Trader to Abolitionist
Wednesday Lectures | This program is completed
Michael Thurmond
It’s not every day that a new chapter in Georgia’s colonial history is written. Most Georgians know (and brag about) Georgia as the lone colony in British North America founded without slavery. Largely unknown, though, is Oglethorpe’s personal evolution on the subjects of slavery and freedom before the era of abolition. Michael Thurmond discusses his new book, James Oglethorpe, Father of Georgia: A Founder’s Journey from Slave Trader to Abolitionist.
Copies of the author’s book are available at the lecture.
