OVERSTANDING BEOWULF

Scholars have been fighting over Beowulf since it was first translated. Lost in the perennial dispute is the fact that the work is simply a great narrative poem. This small-group seminar looks at the story, explores difficulties with competing translations, and assesses some of the conclusions resulting from scholarly research.
