GREEK MYTHOLOGY

HUGH PARKER

Although it’s been about 3,000 years since the Greeks developed their elaborate mythology, there is still an assumption of familiarity with these famous stories. If the recollections are shaky, then this introduction to Greek mythology provides a more solid foundation. Topics include the Greek view of creation, the major gods and their myths, and stories of some of the most famous mythological heroes. Time permitting, the course explores the influence of Greek mythology on Western culture, especially on art.

Hugh Parker received a PhD in classical studies from the University of Minnesota and spent his career at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro teaching Greek and Latin, along with Greek mythology. His main research interest is Latin poetry, especially Latin poetry dealing with Greek mythological themes.
