AI’S QUEST FOR MEANING?

Brian Martine

Art and religion, philosophy and science. These are names used variously for the traditions that have developed amidst attempts to understand humankind and the world. Will the “artificially intelligent” machines humans are building help or hinder us in the quest for meaning? This course addresses some of the questions AI is raising about meaning.

Brian Martine is professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Having established the department, he chaired it for twenty years. He served for ten years as director of the Humanities Center at UAH and

led The Metaphysical Society of America. He is the author of Individuals and Individuality, Indeterminacy and Intelligibility.

  •  This program is offered in-person only.

  • Suggested readings will be drawn from philosophical, religious, scientific, and literary traditions. Most will be freely available on the internet.
