Roger Smith

The undisputed spokesman for his decade, F. Scott Fitzgerald created a novel that speaks equally to the American experience as to the Jazz Age, a term which he coined. One hundred years after the appearance of The Great Gatsby, this course examines biographical and publication events surrounding Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, the factors leading to its enduring influence, and the novel itself in a collegial re-reading of the text to reveal its depth and beauty.

Roger Smith is the founding director of The Learning Center. He began his career in education as a teacher of American literature, regularly making The Great Gatsby part of his curriculum.
