Kathryn Sophia Belle

Audre Lorde, a towering social, political, and philosophical figure, introduced herself as “a Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet.” Also a brilliant essayist, dynamic speaker, and committed professor, Lorde wrote in 1979: “I believe the integrity of my survival…has been my most important contribution.”

Kathryn Sophia Belle is one of some 50 Black women who hold a PhD in philosophy in the U.S. She is author of Hannah Arendt and the Negro Question, Beauvoir and Belle: A Black Feminist Critique of The Second Sex, and a forthcoming book on Audre Lorde.
