SLAPTON SANDS IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR
Thursday Programs | Available
Jane Elwell and David Jones
During WWII, some 3,000 residents of the Slapton Sands area of Devon were evacuated from their rural villages and farms as Allied forces prepared for the upcoming Normandy invasion. This seminar reveals these civilians’ experiences before, during, and after the evacuation, while also exploring the devastating German attack which killed 749 men during Exercise Tiger, an operation forgotten in the fog of war.
Jane Elwell is a retired educator who has walked many miles of footpaths in the English countryside, making some fascinating discoveries along the way (in addition to drinking many cups of tea).
David Jones is frequent instructor at The Learning Center. Another of his passions is World War II history, an interest which he has long indulged as an instructor and guide at The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force.
