Roger Smith

Medical doctor, artist, collector, historian—Preston Russell was the quintessential inquisitive Savannahian. His book (with co-author Barbara Hines) Savannah: A History of Her People Since 1733 is a classic of popular history and a wonderful resource for both natives and newcomers. Each class meeting highlights one chapter of Russell’s work, and the course takes in the book in its entirety. Free-form discussion is guided by Roger Smith and enhanced by anecdotes and images.

Roger Smith is a native of Savannah who has made a life’s study of the city and its history. He was a personal friend of the author and relishes sharing the stories of Preston Russell and so many other of Savannah’s unforgettable personalities, past and present.

  • This discussion class is offered in-person only.
