BANNED BOOKS
Wednesday Classes | Available
Joyce White
10:30 – 11:30 am | Wednesdays, July 16 through August 20
One response to the banning of books is the reading—or re-reading—of those very books! This course offers just such an opportunity, with the guidance of Georgia Southern University professor Joyce White. Often banned by censors and citizen-activists citing the catch-all criticism of “divisive concepts,” Beloved (1987), Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), and The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) get full attention in this introspective and interactive reading course
- This course is limited to 25 participants and is not open to single-session attendance.
This program is offered in-person only.
Joyce White is a professor of literature at Georgia Southern University where she specializes in African-American studies and Gullah-Geechee culture. She earned her PhD at the Clark Atlanta University.
- Texts for this course: Beloved by Toni Morrison, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
