THE CURIOUS WORLD OF QUANTUM THEORY
SCIENCE + POETRY + ART + PHILOSOPHY

Brian Martine | 10:30 – 11:30 am | Wednesdays | September 24 through November 19 |

The scientists who invented quantum theory were not philosophers. Yet thinkers such as Einstein, Heisenberg, and Bohr provided a new understanding of reality broad enough to embrace voices as varied as John Dewey and Simone de Beauvoir, Henri Matisse and Edward Hopper, Virginia Woolf and Thomas Mann. This course explores quantum theory as a frame within which to reconsider the philosophical, literary, and artistic ideas of the twentieth century.

Brian Martine is professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Having established the department, he chaired it for twenty years. He served for ten years as director of the Humanities Center at UAH and led The Metaphysical Society of America. He is the author of Individuals and Individuality, Indeterminacy and Intelligibility.
