REVISITING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

Larry D. Thompson
12:00 – 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 17 | $10 for all

Most American adults learned about the Constitution in a civics course. Memorizing the Preamble, discovering the three branches of government, mastering separation of powers and checks and balances—all of these and more became foundational to understanding the basis of American federalism. Larry D. Thompson revisits these fundamentals, explores key Constitutional amendments, and highlights historic moments when the Constitution provided needed guardrails to government and society, and times when the document itself underwent crisis.

Larry Thompson has had a distinguished law career: as a partner in the Atlanta law firm King & Spalding and now as counsel to the firm Finch McCranie.

His positions of service in private industry have included PepsiCo, Southern Company, and other corporations.

Mr. Thompson served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia where he directed the Southern Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and served on the Attorney General’s Economic Crime Council. He served as U.S. Deputy Attorney General in the George W. Bush Administration

where he led the National Security Coordination Council and the Corporate Fraud Task Force.

He served on the faculty of the University of Georgia’s School of Law as the holder of the John A. Sibley Chair of Corporate and Business Law.

In 2017, Mr. Thompson was appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice as the Independent Corporate Compliance Monitor and Auditor for Volkswagen AG.

He is the author of Quiet Counsel: Looking Back on a Life of Service to the Law.
Copies of Mr. Thompson’s book are available for purchase at the program.
