Mother of eleven and survivor of severe domestic violence, Emma Rowena Gatewood sought refuge in solitary walks in the woods. When she was finally free of her husband and with her children raised, “Grandma Gatewood,” at age 67, became the first female to hike the entire 2,168-mile Appalachian Trail. This course uses lecture and documentary video footage to tell the inspiring tale.
Karen Neubauer spent her career as a travel agent (she worked with TLC on many overseas educational excursions). In her retirement, she works part time for the Live Oak Public Library system.
