Tom Watson’s agrarian vision for Georgia and the entire South after the Civil War contrasted with that of Atlanta newspaper powerhouse Henry Grady (who coined the phrase the “New South”). Grady advocated an urban, outward-looking, industrializing—though still racially segregated—region.
Stan Deaton is a Georgia native with degrees from the University of Georgia and the University of Florida. In his more than 25 years at the Georgia Historical Society, he has overseen the Georgia historical marker program, the Georgia Historical Quarterly, and many other services of the Society.
