After the Civil War, women of both races sought their own emancipation, challenging old attitudes about female nature and woman’s place in society. New opportunities, though not the same for Black women, came through university education, changing domestic positions, woman suffrage, and other elements of new life in the “New South.”
Ellen Denker is a museum consultant and independent scholar based in western North Carolina. She holds degrees from Grinnell College and the University of Delaware, where she was a fellow in the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture.
