Born in 1732 into Virginia’s aristocracy, George Washington nevertheless struggled to carve out a role in his complicated family. An earnest soldier, he suffered his share of failures in the French and Indian War. From a long line of slave-holding planters, he was the only Founder to free all the enslaved persons in his power to liberate at the time of his death. A hero of the American Revolution who could have claimed kinghood, he preferred being called Father of his country, voluntarily resigning his military command in 1783 and yielding presidential power in 1797. This comprehensive course reveals the many facets of a complex figure at the genesis of American independence.
