This course explores in a year-by-year fashion the “Great War,” from the unexpected outbreak of the conflict in 1914 to the unsatisfactory peace settlement of 1919. Major topics in between include fighting on the western and eastern fronts and in the Middle East, the advent of submarine warfare, the violence of the Russian revolution, the role of the U.S. in the war, and the war’s effect on civilian populations.

Byron Boyd earned his PhD in European history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For more than thirty years, he taught Advance Placement American and European history at Savannah Country Day School. He also served

on the history faculty of Armstrong State and Georgia Southern Universities. In his retirement, he engages a variety of topics at The Learning Center.
