During and after the American Revolution, people close to the Commander-in-Chief encouraged him to seize the reins of power permanently. Yet Washington willingly relinquished his military command at the war’s close. Again during his service as the nation’s first President, Washington might have installed himself as either king or dictator. Yet he chose instead the peaceful transfer of power. Georgia Historical Society’s Senior Historian Stan Deaton delineates the uncharted pathways Washington navigated, and what might have happened if the Father of his country had taken a different tack.
