Victor Hugo’s epic 1862 novel is best known today as an on-stage musical. How does each medium, the prose narrative or the theatrical musical, affect the message that Hugo wished to convey? An examination of this classic work in words, film, and music probes Hugo’s theology, history, and literary genius.
Janet Stone earned her PhD from Emory University, followed by more than three decades of teaching on the history faculty of Armstrong State University,
“… so long as ignorance and misery remain on earth, books like this cannot be useless.”
