FILM SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION WITH FILMMAKER J.J. ANDERSON

J.J. ANDERSON & BERTICE BERRY
FREE TO ALL; REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED

Sometimes I Feel Like I Am Almost Home is a short film by Los Angeles–based filmmaker and visual storyteller J.J. Anderson. It contains deeply personal stories that unfold through new and archival footage, including intergenerational interviews. Filmed in Columbus County, North Carolina, where black residents were historically excluded from the public pool, bodies of water are a recurrent motif that speak to both racial exclusion and eventual healing.

J.J. Anderson is a self-taught filmmaker whose work explores the deeper aspects of culture, community, and intergenerational healing practices. Her film exemplifies a deeply personal concept the artist terms “return to self,” the sometimes painful spiritual journey to reclaim the freedom, passion, and possibility of childhood as an adult.

Bertice Berry holds a PhD in sociology and is a sought-after public speaker, storyteller, and author. She created the Institute for Story as a reaction to COVID, and her novel BlackWorld appeared in 2023. She is a deacon of the Episcopal Church and serves at Christ Church in Savannah.
