This course traces the southern phase of the Revolutionary War from the British turn toward Georgia in 1778 through the evacuation of Savannah in 1782. The military, political, and social struggle in Georgia and the South Carolina backcountry, where Loyalist and Patriot forces fought a brutal war of raids, militia actions, and shifting occupations, receive special attention. The course culminates in the collapse of British power in the South and the return of Savannah to American control.
