Mark joined a team of National Science Foundation (NSF) experts at Tennessee Tech to study drought in the southern Appalachians. His work doesn't just focus on droughts; it focuses on the transition into and out of drought conditions. During these transitions, disastrous flooding, severe storms, devastating fires, and other extreme elements reach their highest impacts. Such events include the Gatlinburg fires of 2016 and Hurricane Helene in 2024.
