Fabric Design is an ancient art form created in cultures throughout the world. Students will learn a variety of resist methods through experimentation in the traditional use of "Indigo Vat Dye". Indigo is one of the oldest natural plant-based dyes in the world for coloring fabrics and used today to color blue jeans. Students will create artistic designs using traditional Japanese Shibori techniques of tying, knotting, stitchery and accordion. Students will learn how to mix a synthetic Indigo Vat Dye and discover how acids and bases meet value, through "the chemistry of color". Students will experience how Indigo Vat Dye solutions produce "magical" fiber-reaction results through oxygenation when dye is exposed to air.
