Leaders are expected to be both leaders and managers, which means they need to clearly understand the difference between management authority and leadership influence. Based on the West Point model of leader development, we’ve seen how great leaders develop influence based on their character, their competence and their behavior as a leader. These inputs, in turn, create organizational outcomes such as trust, positive emotional energy and extraordinary performance – all of which are hallmarks of a great organization. Light snacks will be served.

Those interested in developing themselves into great leaders.

Benefits:

No one ever became a great leader by reading a book but sitting and thinking about leadership principles provides an invaluable roadmap to the leader development journey. Without a clear mental model of the concept of leadership, it is not possible to craft an individual leadership development path.

Learning Objectives:
• Distinguish management authority from leadership influence. Authority and influence are valuable tools for anyone with organizational responsibility. The challenge is that they are very different concepts and they require very different competencies.
• Understand how to develop your own leadership influence. Organizations cannot give influence to leaders, they must develop it for themselves. This requires leaders to understand the significance of the competence, character and behavior of great leaders.
• Understand the components of the leader development journey. It is one thing to craft an individual leadership journey. It is a very different thing to effectively serve as a coach or mentor for others who are embarking on this journey. This requires an understanding of the distinct components of leadership development.

Mike Hennelly, Ph.D.

My forty-four year career has consisted of more than two decades of military service as well as work in the corporate world and academe. I was just recently named an associate professor at the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame and I have taught strategic leadership to Notre Dame executive MBA students. From 2007 until I retired in 2014, I was a professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Military Academy at West Point. During that time, I taught strategy, management, ethics and leadership to more than six hundred cadets. An overview of my career follows: Military experience: - Led U.S. Army soldiers deployed to NATO - Qualified as an Army Ranger and certified as an Army strategist - Gave weekly strategy briefings to four-star generals for two years - Retired after twenty-one years of active duty as a lieutenant-colonel Corporate experience: - Worked for six years at the headquarters of largest company in the world (responsible for all logistics programs for the Sam’s Club division of Walmart). Academic experience: - Taught strategic management courses to MBA students at the University of Arkansas and the University of Tulsa. - Taught several different management courses at West Point (including strategic management) for seven years. - Gave presentations on strategic leadership to MBA students from Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (both in the U.S. and China). - Guest speaker at a leadership conference at Yale University. I received my undergraduate degree from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, my master’s degree from the University of Chicago and my doctorate in strategic management from the University of Arkansas. After my retirement from West Point, I primarily give seminars and consult on strategy and leadership to executives of some of the world’s largest companies.
