Poverty in America
Lifelong Learning | Registration opens 8/20/2026 11:00 AM EDT
This class will explore why the richest country in the world has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. We will be reading and discussing the book Poverty, by America by Matthew Desmond. The book offers a framework for understanding the causes of poverty as well as proposing solutions to ending it.
Please read the prologue and the first chapter prior to the first class.
The instructor will briefly review the chapters at the beginning of class so feel free to attend even if you have not read them.
Registration is open to those who have not used a registered spot for the class before. After August 31, if spots remain, former students can register.
