Program Description

Fraktur is a decorative and script form of folk art that originated in 16th century Germany and flourished among Pennsylvania Germans in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is known for its highly artistic and elaborate folk art images and borders. Fraktur is named for the heavy, angular German font, which is also known as Blackletter. Fraktur pieces often commemorated marriages, baptisms, house blessings and academic achievements. Learn about the history of Fraktur and create a personal commemorative piece of your own just in time for the holiday season.

Halley, Frances

Frances Halley

Frances Halley is a local folk artist and illustrator. She is a graduate of the Art Institute of

Pittsburgh and is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators, the Folk Art Society of

America and the Guild of American Papercutters. She has a particular interest in American Folk

Art, both historically and as an artistic genre. Her work has been shown at North Hills Art

Center, the Martha Gault Gallery at Slippery Rock University, the Foster and Muriel McCarl

Coverlet Gallery at St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, PA and at the Sen.John Heinz History

Center where she was awarded an honorable mention prize for her piece in the juried exhibit,

Art of Facts - Uncovering Pittsburgh. You can see more of her work at www.franceshalley.com. Frances lives in Ross Township with her husband, John and their dog, Lottie.

REFUND POLICY: There are no refunds on membership purchases once the term begins. If you register for a class, camp or program with a fee, you will receive a full refund minus a 10% processing fee or $25 (whichever is less) if you cancel or reschedule within 14 days of the start date of the program. You will receive a 50% refund 7 to 13 days and there are no refunds if you cancel or reschedule less than one week before the start of the start of the program.

In the unlikely event that the CLL has to cancel or reschedule a paid event, you will either be fully refunded in the manner you paid or be able to reschedule. If you need to cancel, please contact the office at lifelonglearning@laroche.edu or 412-536-1026. Please leave a message - we will confirm receipt for the processing date.
